How To Remove Compatibility Mode From A Word For Mac Document Rating: 7,3/10 1176 reviews

In earlier versions of Microsoft Word, the default file format used the .doc file extension. However, newer versions of Word have started to use the .docx file format by default. Word 2013 is still capable of opening .doc files, and you can even save to the .doc file format in Word 2013 if you need to do so. But when Word 2013 opens a .doc file, it will do so in Compatibility Mode.

A common Microsoft Word issue is when every new document is created in compatibility mode. This is readily viewable as Word appends Compatibility Mode next to the document name in the title bar. It seems this is caused by older versions of MS Word that were either previously installed or that still exist in ones system.

You will know that a document is open in compatibility mode when you see those words next to the document title. An example of this is shown below –

The document does need need to remain in that file format, however, and our guide below will show you a few steps that you can take to convert your document so that it can use the full capabilities of Word 2013.

Here is how to convert an older document to the Word 2013 document format –

  1. Open the document in Word 2013.
  2. Click the File tab at the top-left corner of the window.
  3. Click the Convert button.
  4. Click the OK button to confirm that you wish to convert the document to the Word 2013 file type.

These steps are also repeated below with images –

Step 1: Open your document that you wish to convert in Word 2013.

Step 2: Click the File tab at the top-left corner of the window.

Step 3: Click the Convert button near the top of the window.

Step 4: Click the OK button to convert the document to the Word 2013 format and get it out of compatibility mode. Note that you can check the box at the bottom-left corner of the pop-up window if you do not wish to be asked this question again. Your document that previously had the .doc file extension will then be replaced by a document with the same name, but a .docx file extension.

Word 2013 is capable of saving files in a number of different file types. For example, you can save as a PDF from Word 2013 if you have contacts that require documents to be in that file format.

How Office uses compatibility mode

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint use compatibility mode to open binary Office documents that were created in Office 2003 or earlier versions of Office. Word also uses compatibility mode to open OpenXML documents that were created in Word 2007 and Word 2010.

Set default compatibility mode on file creation for Word

If you use Group Policy, you can use the Set default compatibility mode on file creation policy setting to manage the default compatibility mode that Word uses to create new Word documents. This might be necessary if you have add-ins or macros that use the layout functions that are used in Word 2007 or Word 2010. When you enable this policy setting, you can specify which versions of Word that new Word documents are compatible with. Several configurations options are available for this setting:

  • Word 2003 This mode disables features in Word that are incompatible with Word 2003.

  • Word 2007 This mode disables features in Word that are incompatible with Word 2007.

  • Word 2010 This mode disables features in Word that are incompatible with Word 2010.

  • Full functionality mode This mode makes sure that all new features remain enabled. This is the default setting for Word.

When you choose the Word 2003 option, Word is configured to create new Open XML files that have Word 2007 and later features disabled. Doing so makes sure that the Open XML files do not contain content that Word 2003 users can't edit. However, users of Office 2003 must still have the Compatibility Pack installed before they can edit Word Open XML files that are compatible with Word 2003.
