  • Pros

LCD preview screen. Fast photo printing. WiFi. Good business printing speed for its price.

  • Bottom Line

The Dell P513w All-in-One Wireless Photo Printer provides basic MFP features, decent output quality, and fairly fast print speeds for its price, for a household or for double duty in home and home office.

Recent inexpensive Dell inkjet multifunction printers (MFPs) such as the Dell V313w All-in-One Wireless Printer ($99.99 direct, 3 stars) have been geared mostly to home-office use. The Dell P513w All-in-One Wireless Photo Printer ($129.99 direct) adds an LCD screen for previewing photos, which gives it more cred as a household printer or for dual use in the home and the home office, provided that your printing demands are light. It has few frills, but provides decent speed and solid output quality, particularly for text.

The P513w prints, copies, and scans. It can print from memory cards or USB thumb drives, even when not connected to a computer. It is white, with a black lid and front panel, and is fairly compact, measuring 7 by 18.8 by 14.5 inches (HWD) and weighing 15.3 pounds. It has a paper capacity of 100 sheets—which relegates it to household use or light duty as a home-office printer—and has an auto-duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. The front panel includes, in addition to several function buttons and a 4-way controller, a 2.4-inch color LCD for reviewing photos. A memory-card slot (which fits standard-size memory cards in the SD, MMC, xD, and MS formats) and a port for a USB thumb drive or PictBridge camera are housed behind a protective door.

The P513w provides USB and WiFi connectivity; I tested it over a USB connection to a PC running Windows Vista.

Print Speed and Output Quality
The Dell P513w printed out the latest version of our business applications suite (as timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software), at a speed of 2.7 effective pages per minute (ppm), a decent time for a $129 MFP. It matched the Dell V313w, which averaged 2.7 ppm, and beat out the Brother MFC-J410w ($100 street, 3.5 stars), which we clocked at 2.2 ppm. The Editors' Choice Epson Stylus NX625 ($149.99 direct, 4 stars) zipped through the tests at an average of 4 ppm. The P513 averaged a swift 45 seconds to output a 4-by-6 print.

Text quality was above average for an inkjet MFP—good enough to be used for schoolwork and most business documents, though it falls short of the quality needed for demanding desktop publishing applications.

Graphics quality was sub-par for an inkjet, good enough for most schoolwork (though probably not for a thesis or dissertation) and general business use. Whether they're up for use as PowerPoint handouts depends on what you're presenting and who you'd be giving the handouts to. Issues included posterization (abrupt shifts in color where they should be gradual), banding (a regular pattern of lines or bands of discoloration), and dithering (solid areas showing as graininess).

Photo quality was average for an inkjet. Colors, though rich, often crossed the line into oversaturation. Several images showed dithering. For the most part, the quality was about what you'd expect from drugstore prints.

The Dell P513w All-in-One Wireless Photo Printer is a good budget MFP with some photocentric features, such as its 2.4-inch color LCD for previewing photos and the ability to print from USB thumb drives and media cards, even when not connected to a PC. Its business printing speed is good for its price, it prints photos quickly, and outputs surprisingly good text. Though mostly a household MFP, it could fill in as a home-office printer in a pinch, and is compact enough to be a good choice for a student in a dorm.
