16. June 2008 - WirtschaftsWoche: Es kommt selten vor, dass zwei deutsche Softwareunternehmen nahezu allein eine Marktnische in den USA besetzen, dazu im Geschäft mit Apple-Computern. Es geht um das Aufzeichnen von Fernsehsendungen auf dem Mac-Rechner.
Externe Produkte für Apple zu entwickeln ist risikoreich. Denn sobald der Konzern ein eigenes Angebot dagegenstellt, sind Drittfirmen meist geliefert. Doch Apple-Chef Steve Jobs hat klargemacht, dass er für digitale Videorekorder auf dem Mac nix übrig hat. Früher hielt er sie für überflüssig. Heute interessiert ihn nur der Verkauf von TV-Fernsehsendungen im iTunes-Store.

Bislang war mit The Tube, der Fernsehsoftware von Equinux, nur wenig anzufangen - wenn man nicht auch den zugehörigen TV-Empfänger TubeStick oder ein Miglia-Gerät benutzte. Mit dem letzten Wartungsupdate allerdings hat die Software hinzugelernt: Jetzt arbeitet sie auch mit einer Reihe von Empfängern weiterer Hersteller zusammen, von Terratec bis hin zu Hauppauge.

Wer am Mac fernsehen will, hat jetzt mehr Auswahl. Er kann auch dann die Softwarlösung The Tube verwenden, wenn er keinen Equinux- oder Miglia-Empfänger einsetzt. Acht weitere Geräte umfasst nun die Kompatibilitätsliste des Herstellers: Mit den Empfängern Terratec Cinergy T2, Twinhan DTV Alpha, EyeTV für DVB-T, Digitus DVB-T Digital USB, Freecom DVB-T USB Stick, Hauppauge WinTV-Nova-T-Stick, MSI Technology Digivox mini Mac und Digittrade DVB-T Stick arbeitet The Tube zusammen. Hardware

The TubeStick has a build one cut above a USB flash drive, which sounds bad but is pretty typical for this product segment. They are all made of plastic. The unit heats up during use, which the manual says is normal. The included antenna does very well, and has a conveniently magnetic base.

What's missing? I didn't like the programming guide as much as Elgato's TitanTV. TitanTV is much more visual. Also, missing is an easy way to edit out commercials. To edit you have to export your recordings to iMovie.

Conclusions

Going up against a very mature and very Mac-centric EyeTV is tough, but The Tube makes up for some software shortcomings with unique and very Web 2.0 features like online clip sharing and buddy integration.

The TubeStick is as flexible as it gets when it comes to inputs. If the software shortcomings don't bug you, you'll dig this easy TV receiver. You'll need an

Dank „Fernsehen am Laptop“ entgeht einem auch unterwegs kein EM-Spiel. Die OÖN haben zehn DVB-T-Sticks einem Test unterzogen. Den Testsieger gibt es als spezielle EM-Edition.

Auch wenn nun erste Angebote für Handy-TV auftauchen, ist die günstigere und komfor-tablere Lösung immer noch DVB-T am Laptop. Zahlreiche Hersteller bieten entsprechende USB-Sticks an. Mit ihnen wird der eigene Laptop nicht nur zum EM-Ersatzfernseher, sondern oftmals auch zum Videorekorder.

Je nach Softwareumfang lassen sich Sendungen perfekt auf DVD brennen: Das lang erwartete Endspiel kann so ohne großen Aufwand für alle Zeiten festgehalten werden. Und das sogar unterwegs.

Eigene DVDs erstellen

Der Wunsch, Österreich möge doch ins Finale kommen, wird wohl eine Träumerei bleiben. Ein wahr gewordener Traum hingegen sind die durchaus moderaten Preise der DVB-T-Sticks: Die Modelle im OÖN-Testfeld kosten zwischen 35 und 120 .

Platz 1 im Test geht an Pinnacles speziellen EM-Stick (siehe Bild). Das beiliegende Fanmagazin hat zwar Fehler beim Mannschafts-Kader. Dafür zeugen Soft- und Hardware von Qualität. Die kleine Fernbedienung ist eine tolle Draufgabe. Der Preis liegt bei rund 60 .

Auch Platz 2 ist eine EM-Edition: Terratecs „Cinergy Hybrid XE“ bietet zum Preis von 50 eine schicke Optik und eine gute Softwareausstattung. Auch analoge Quellen (Videorekorder) lassen sich anschließen. Achten sollte man, ob das jeweils richtige Kabe beiliegt.

Den 3. und 4. Platz belegen die Sticks von Hauppauge. Während es sich beim „WinTV Nova-T“ mit 35 um eine günstige Lösung bei ansehnlichem Lieferumfang handelt, zeichnet sich „WinTV HVR 900H“ (50 ) durch seine Hybridbauweise aus: Das teurere Modell kann auch analoge Geräte einbinden. Eine Playstation 3 funktionierte im Test ausgezeichnet. Bei der Softwareausstattung ist Hauppauge im Hintertreffen.

Fernsehen auf dem Mac

Auch Apple-Anhänger brauchen nicht auf DVB-T zu verzichten. Ganz wie Windows-User haben sie die Qual der Wahl. Im OÖN-Test überzeugen vor allem die Lösungen von Elgato. Die deutsche Firma legt allen Produkten dieselbe Software bei. Das günstigste Paket „EyeTV“ hat deshalb das beste Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis (50 ). Für die EM-Übertragungen sollte es völlig ausreichen. Wer aber etwa auf eine Fernbedienung Wert legt, muss tiefer in die Tasche greifen.

Im Vergleich zu Windows-Angeboten kostet Elgatos Hybrid-Stick mit ca. 120 deutlich mehr. Dafür fehlt es hier an nichts.

Konkurrent Equinux verfolgt mit dem „Tubestick“ das Ziel, Internet-Technologien wie iChat einzubinden. Die innovative Software des Sticks (40 ) kommt an Elgatos Pendant jedoch nicht ganz heran.

03. June 2008 - Macsimum News: It's not quite up to the standards of Elgato's EyeTV hardware/software combos, but equinux's US$129 TubeStick hybrid is laying the groundwork for some serious competition—which can only benefit all Mac uses.

The TubeStick hybrid lets you watch TV shows on your Mac, iPhone or iPod. Together with The Tube, equinux' TV viewing application, the TubeStick hybrid brings both digital and analog television to the Mac. The USB TV receiver allows you to watch, pause and record live television on your Mac in HD quality. With The Tube software that comes with TubeStick hybrid, you can even chat with other viewers during each TV show. Admittedly, this is not something that I have any interest in doing—when I'm watching TV, I just want to watch TV—but the IMing, text messaging generation will probably love the feature.

With the new TubeToGo web services you can schedule, manage, publish and watch TV recordings via iPhone or iPod touch on the go. The TubeStick hybrid—one of the smallest devices in its class—has two built-in receivers, enabling you to watch free-to-air digital HDTV (ATSC) as well as digital (QAM) and analog (NTSC) cable television. In areas with ATSC, reception can be picked up by the antenna, in HD quality. If digital reception in your area is poor, then you might want to stick with an analogue tuner instead.

It comes with a white compact antenna and a break-out cable, that allows you to connect to your camcorders, analog video recorders and game consoles using S-Video or Composite. TubeStick hybrid is designed to fit in the USB port of MacBooks and MacBook Pros, without blocking other necessary plugs. However, it won't fit into the USB ports of the ultra-slim MacBook Air without first attaching the included USB cord.

The TubeStick hybrid includes The Tube 2, equinux' latest edition of its TV solution for Mac users. The software provides you with manual and automatic Timeshift and lets you rewind the current program to record it from start with its Déjà Vu functionality. With The Tube you can schedule recordings of your favorite TV shows, manage them in a library and sort them by name or by date. The Tube supports Mac OS X's Spotlight to search for recordings and displays a QuickLook preview when showing them in Finder for Mac OS X 10.5 ('Leopard').

On May 13, equinux released The Tube 2.7, a new version of the TV software for the Mac. The upgrade introduces placeshifting. The current digital TV show can be shared with others via iChat. Mac OS X 10.5 ('Leopard') users can simply drag a The Tube icon into an active video chat to enjoy the show with friends via iChat Theater. The iChat partner can even record a video clip of the show being shared.

The TubeStick also includes a second program called MediaCentral, a very nifty media center app that looks a lot like Front Row, but improves upon it in many ways. The software is easy to install, though it does require a rather cumbersome registration process (you have to go online and set up an account). Also (and this isn't a compliant, just a comment), MediaCentral insists that you download RealPlayer and Windows Media Player—both free—to take advantage of its IPTV features.

The strong point of MediaCentral is the gamut of media it supports. Besides interacting with your iPhoto, iMovie and iTunes folders, it can tackle IPTV, online clips (such as those from YouTube and Google Video), digital TV (DVB-T), Internet radio, picture feeds from sites such as flickr, Flash video games and even the Skype telephonic app. If you have an Elgato Systems' EyeTV digital video recorder (DVR) connected to your Mac, MediaCentral's Movies screen offers the option to view movies stored in the EyeTV Recordings folder. The Movies screen also provides access to movies in your Mac's Movies folder and lets you preview the same movie trailers offered by Front Row.

As with all equinux products, I don't like the licensing scheme that ties the Tubestick software to a particular Mac (though you have four more installs.) At least, as with iTunes, you can deauthorize a Mac and use the license on another one if you need or want to do so.

Also, the hardware/software combo requires a good digital TV reception. From what I've heard, has some issues with PowerPC Macs, though it runs flawlessly on my Intel iMac. I wish you could pause or rewind live TV. And I wish the Tube had an electronics program guide.

However, if the Tube isn't yet as elegant as Elgato's EyeTV, it's shaping up to pose some serious competition. And that's a very good thing indeed.

Si jusqu'à présent le marché des récepteurs TNT sous Mac est dominé par Elgato et ses différentes solutions, Equinux, son TubeStick et son logiciel The Tube, viennent essayer de lui faire de l'ombre…

La tâche ne va pas être aisée tant le premier a pris d'avance en terme d'implantation et d'image de marque. La bataille fait rage entre les deux enreprises allemandes et leurs bureaux respectifs dans la Silicon Valley.

Arrêtons nous aujourd'hui sur le produit TNT d'Equinux.

Installation

L'installation matérielle est simplissime, il suffit de brancher le stick sur un port USB alimenté du Macintosh, si besoin via la rallongue USB incluse ainsi que l'antenne TNT fournie ou si vous le souhaitez une antenne classique grâce à l'adaptateur lui aussi présent dans la boîte. Parfait.

L'installation logicielle prendra elle quelques minutes grâce à l'assistant, il faut tout d'abord installer les pilotes et le logiciel TubeStick qui permet de contrôler la clef TNT ainsi que, si vous le souhaitez, le logiciel MediaCentral, concurrent de FrontRow pas complètement abouti. Une fois le logiciel installé, pas encore possible de servir de la clef, il faut en passer par l'enregistrement de l'application grâce au code fourni avec le TubeStick, mais cet enregistrement nécessite la création d'un compte Equinux. Une fois le formulaire rempli, votre Mac sera autorisé directement auprès d'Equinux. Internet est donc obligatoire et vous disposez de cinq activations possibles pour le logiciel. Il faut donc penser à désactiver (comme pour les chansons achetées sur l'iTunes Store) le logiciel si un jour vous changez de Mac. Un courriel de confirmation est même envoyé à l'adresse fournie avec votre adresse Ethernet et le numéro de série de votre Mac. Etrange, mais transparent.

Quelques surprises toute de même pendant l'installation, alors que le français avait été choisi comme langue par défaut, certains écrans sont apparus en allemand ou en anglais.

Réglages

Afin de regarder la télévision, il faut encore régler les chaînes. Un grand classique qui s'effectue sans souci. Comme pour toutes les clefs TNT, deux types de balayages existent et si vous choisissez le balayage approfondi, vous avez le temps d'aller chercher un café … voire plus.

Et quel meilleur moment pour aborder les difficultés de récepton liées à ces clefs TNT. Avant d'en acheter une, quelque soit la marque, il faut absolument être certain d'être dans une zone de réception correcte. Dans le cas contraire, le positionnement de l'antenne fournie peut vite devenir un enfer si aucun accès à une antenne de toit ou collective n'est possible (antenne collective qui devra évidemment avoir été migrée vers la TNT).

Une fois les chaînes trouvées, c'est fait, vous pouvez officiellement profiter de votre récepteur.

Utilisation quotidienne

L'utilisation du logiciel au quotidien est aisé et un support (minimal) de la télécommande Apple est offert. L'interface est au look iTunes version Leopard, c'est à dire que les éléments graphiques sont foncés et mats, Aqua, c'est fini ! La fenêtre principale regroupe toutes les informations importantes en un seul endroit. Que ce soit la fenêtre de lecture TV et grâce à un système d'onglet : la liste des chaînes, un outil de discussion en direct, la liste des programmes et la vidéothèque qui recense les programmes enregistrés.

Egalement disponible dans la fenêtre, le réglage du son, le temps de lecture, la barre de navigation dans la vidéo déjà reçue et enregistrée et les boutons de pause et d'enregistrement rapide.

La qualité de l'image obtenue est raisonnable même s'il n'est pas possible de faire des miracles lorsque la qualité reçue est limite sur des programmes anciens filmés avec une faible résolution pour des télévisions avec peu de lignes. Le logiciel fait ce qu'il peut pour afficher une image correcte sur un écran LCD avec beaucoup plus de lignes, tout comme un télévision HD doit 'upscaler' l'image pour l'afficher.

Enregistrement et pause

Indispensable pour tout outil de réception de la télévision, ces fonctions sont présentes et rapidement accessibles dans l'application The Tube.

La fonction de pause du direct est aujourd'hui largement connue : il possible mettre pause sur le direct et l'application se charge d'enregistrer la suite du programme en tâche de fond. Il est ensuite possible de reprendre la lecture en décalé pendant que l'enregistrement continu en fond. Sur notre machine de test, un iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2,16GHz, on observe parfois quelques ratés lors du rattrapge du direct. Il est d'ailleurs possible de régler la taille du cache vidéo sur le disque dur. Appréciable, mais aucun repère n'est donné en Mo ou Go pour évaluer la taille qui sera effectivement prise sur le disque.

L'enregistrement est tout aussi indispensable. Il peut être lancé en direct par l'intermédiaire d'un bouton facilement identifiable, mais aussi programmé en réglant la date et l'heure du début et de fin, le titre du programme, la chaîne et un délai de sécurité avant et après l'enregistrement au cas où la chaîne aurait du retard ou de l'avance à la diffusion.

Exportation

Une fois un programme enregistré, c'est logiquement qu'on se tourne vers les possibilités d'exportation pour regarder son émission au salon sur l'Apple TV ou en balade sur un iPod ou iPhone. Il est possible d'exporter rapidement pour iPod, iPhone, Apple TV ou iMovie en choisissant la qualité parmi 'meilleure qualité', 'plus petite taille' ou 'export rapide' avec la possibilité d'ajouter automatiquement le fichier à iTunes. C'est facile et accessible, mais on aurait aimé la possibilité de choisir plus finement les réglages d'exportation comme c'est possible avec l'API QuickTime.

Pas de surprise au niveau des temps d'exportation et de la qualité des images obtenues, c'est probablement le moteur de Leopard qui est mis à contribution et on ne note pas de différence avec des vidéos encodées depuis QuickTime avec des réglages approchants ceux proposés par The Tube.

Fonctions annexes

En plus de ces fonctions de base, le logiciel propose quelques fonctions supplémentaires comme TubeToGo qui offre la possibilité de partager une vidéo depuis le Mac accessible depuis un navigateur (Mac, PC, iPhone, iPod touch, …). Pratique mais déjà vu chez la concurrence. Ce qui est inédit en revanche, c'est la possibilité de programmer les enregistrement à distance, un bon point si l'on a oublié de programmer l'enregistrement de son émission préférée.

Inédit aussi, la possibilité d'obtenir la liste des programmes depuis un flux XML qu'on peut trouver gratuitement ou la possibilité de discuter des programmes en cours de diffusion sur un espace de discussion en ligne.

The Tube est en ce moment fourni avec une licence pour le logiciel de Media Center d'Equinux appelé MediaCentral. Il permet outre le visionnage de la télé, de commander la lecture d'un DVD, de regarder les photos du Mac, des séquences ou de jouer à des jeux flash. Intéressant mais pas encore assez abouti par rapport à FrontRow tant au niveau graphique qu'au niveau des fonctionnalités.

Conclusion

L'association du matériel TubeStick et du logiciel The Tube est plutôt bonne et les fonctions s'étoffent petit à petit pour rattraper la référence EyeTV. Mais il manque encore quelques fonctions utiles comme une intégration plus poussée avec MediaCentral, des commandes plus précises pour contrôler le direct ou plus de simplicité pour accéder à ses enregistrement depuis un autre poste ou baladeur ou la possibilité d'accéder à un flux vidéo sur IP comme avec le propose EyeTV avec Free.

Le prix est tout de même intéressant puisque le paquet matériel plus logiciel est à 39,95€. Il devrait fonctionner à partir d'un Mac possédant un G4 à 1 GHz, mais un G5 ou processeur Intel sont vivement recommandés, 1 Go de mémoire vive, suffisamment d'espace disque pour les enregistrements et Mac OS1 10.4 Tiger, une prise USB 2 et internet pour l'activation obligatoire.

02. June 2008 - MacOrchard.com: equinux USA Inc. produces VPN Tracker, a tool for IPsec networking that helps you connect to VPN hardware and software with Mac OS X. The software is available for purchase in both 'Professional' and 'Personal' editions.

Version 5.2.2 adds/changes the following:

• Fixed an issue where VPN connections were restarted because of events from network interfaces that were not directly related to the connection (e.g. AirPort when the connection was established over Ethernet)
• Improved handling of automated connection start/stop when changing AirPort networks
• Implemented a workaround for a kernel panic on Mac OS X 10.5 systems that occured under some circumstances when network interfaces were removed.
• The 'Cisco Unity' vendor ID is no longer sent to devices that are not known to support this attribute
• Cisco device profiles are now preconfigured to automatically perform XAUTH when requested by the device. Existing connections will not be modified.
• Fixed a crash when using an empty user name during Extended Authentication (XAUTH)
• Fixed a display bug where connection progress was not accurately reflected in the progress bar
• Adjusted mode config timing when using automatic mode config
• Reduced the packet size of the first packet when performing SonicWALL Simple Client Provisioning (SCP). This will help connectivity in situations where routers do not deal well with fragmented packets

The demo mode is equivalent to the licensed Professional Edition, so some of the features (such as high-level encryption) will not be available in the Personal edition. A complete comparison of both editions is available. The demo is valid for 30 days, and connections will time out after 3 minutes.
